The Money Kings are keepin’ it real, baby!!!

For your consideration: Real Estate Profits And Losses.
Scenario 30: Storm Doors . . . Forget It.

We had, stress had, a guy on our crew once that simply insistent that we install storm doors on all of our properties.

We found out. The hard way why this was a terrible idea.

Here’s five reasons to keep away from these things:

  1. They’re a pain in the a$$ to install: These doors seem to be easy to set up and take down. Really, however, once you install the door you’ll find that you’ll have to take it down and put it up again, and again, till you finally manage to square it with the door opening. It takes a good 5 door installations to build the necessary skill to install these doors. Please, please, please don’t think you’ll install one of these doors easily or in 20 minutes.
  2. Wind: Probably, at your own home, you’ll notice the wind blowing your storm door open every now and again. Imagine this happening with your rental, except your tenants won’t care to actually make sure the door is latched. You might be surprised one day to find that your door has been blown off into your yard and is not one wall of the neighborhood kids’ fort.
  3. Locks: Tenants seem to love locking these doors. If you install different core locks on your front and back door, and one day forget to bring both sets of keys, don’t be surprised to find either one of your storm doors locked from the inside before you can even get to your core lock. This happens often.
  4. Screens: These always get torn. There’s no way around it with rentals. If you think your screens or windows won’t get busted forget it.
  5. Damage: This is the worst. You can always tell a crappy rental property by it’s busted up, half hanging-off storm door.

Good luck out there.

  1. I have to do this crazy Jackie Chan karate kick and jump thing to get out of my house in the morning with the things I have to carry. I didn’t even try to install it myself, I knew it would be a pain in the ass, and I was right. My wife insisted on having one though.
