Can You Save Money On Movies By Downloading From ZML.com?

moneyking Feb 26th, 2008 | By moneyking | Category: Tech

We’re going to go out on a limb here on this one, because we’re still perplexed . . .

For your consideration: Can You Save Money On Movies By Downloading Them Cheaper Than You Can Rent Them From ZML.com?

The Money Kings are not quite sure what to do with this, just yet. Take a look at ZML.com. The site looks legitimate enough. There are apparently tons of movies that users can down load to DVD, PDA, iPod, DivX formats for as little as $1.99.

What??!!

Yeah, readers. You can download, according to ZML.com, entire movies for $1.99 to your iPhone.

Now, if you craft a basic A/V rig provided by cables and converters from the Web with your flat-panel TV (Did you buy one during the LCD-craze over the past few years?!) you can save money by circumventing all that Blockbuster and Hollywood Video provide.

WARNING: The Money Kings aren’t necessarily recommending that you use ZML.com. Our research group is still investigating this site, its services and the legality of what it offers.

You should also be aware that the Febrary 21st edition of The Economist outright declares ZML.com as a pirate site. Not that we really care what the legacy media thinks anymore (See The Money Kings post on Newseek and Amazon.com’s Kindle product). They’re just as subject to the rest of us when it comes to getting the facts straight, AND helping people live better lives by saving and making more money for themselves. We’re not quite sure that the legacy media is really interested in helping anyone save or make money. That’s why you read The Money Kings, but we digress . . .

The Money Kings recommend that you merely “look into” ZML.com at this time. Let us know what you think. We’re definitely all feeling the sex appeal of cheap downloads of whole movies. We just don’t want to wind up being made an example of by the MPAA! From what we can tell, at this time, ZML.com is

  1. Owned and run out of Russia, and
  2. Explicitly tells users in its “Terms of Use” that all users are bound by the copyright laws of their country

These are interesting facts; so beware. We know that movie downloading is part of our future, we just don’t know if ZML.com is the outfit that will be legally providing these services to us here in the US.

Good luck out there.

  1. I have just recently signed up to zml.com . I am only going to use it until my balance on the site reaches £0 .You have to add £19.95 to your account minimum to start downloading movies. The reason i won’t be adding more money to it is because after doing some searching on the interent i’m not sure if it is legal to use this site outside of Russia.

I’m not saying i don’t like the site because it’s brilliant.I have checked my bank statement and the correct money has been taken out.And the quality of the movies is excellent.

zml.com say that they do pay royalties to ‘ROMS’ in Russia.I just don’t want to risk my ass that’s all.

One thing i can’t understand is why there arn’t sites like this on the net already where you can download movies cheaply. It’s obvious it’s the way forward.

Piracy will never be stopped. What needs to be done is there needs to be sites where people can download movies cheaply ,so people won’t download them illegaly.

zml.com seem to have beaten the movie industry to it.It’s just a shame that it doesn’t seem to be legal anywhere outside Russia !

  2. I don’t care about the legality of the site, after all, it beats torrents for speed, so hey presto right? The HD content isn’t true HD (1080p is infact 1280×800) but the value is immense, and the quality is very good too.

  3. I found this site several months ago and downloaded a few movies. I thought they were inexpensive because the quality was so-so. Then, I downloaded “Taken” yesterday and when I was watching it I thought, “This hasn’t even come out yet” so I figured something wasn’t right. So I went online and did a search of ZML and found out that it was not a legal service. I contacted the company and told them I did not want the service anymore (suspect I won’t see the rest of the money in my account). I also deleted the files from my computer. My dad used to be in the motion picture business. When movies (music) are illegally download we cost people money and employment. Can you imagine if everyone did that? It would destroy the industry.

  4. How can this be illegal for the user? Its not illegal to buy a movie from someone who you believe has a legitimate service - and if it wasnt legal in Russia, it wouldnt be up and operating, right?

What IS illegal is to sell the movies. So some dude selling copies of DVDs on a streetcorner is a criminal, but the purchasers (assuming they did not know it was a stolen movie) are innocent of a criminal act. So ZML may be hit one day if the Russian Govt decides to comply with US copyright laws, but until then - feel free to download all you want.

Thats why P2P services can get you - you cant just download free stuff - you have to share your stuff.. and thats the illegal part.

Of course, the question of whether it is morally and ethically proper is something else.

  5. Have been using this movie site for a long time and loved the quality, price and customer service was great. Then about 3 weeks ago…..POOF, they have vanished, with the remainder of my cash in my account.

  6. I’m really responding to HEABOU. I have had several emails from them just this week. Have you tried to contact them again?
